Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

I would like to say a big well done to the girls for all their hard work so far in fifth class. I hope you and your families enjoy the holidays and have a very happy Christmas, best wishes for the New Year...from Miss Fitzpatrick

A busy week for fifth class...

On Tuesday we went to Castle manor Nursing Home to sing for the people there. We got into pairs and set off. When we arrived there, we lined up and started to sing the songs we had learnt. When we had finished everyone clapped and we got crisps and a mineral. Then we walked back to school.
As a reward, teacher gave us no homework. Hurray!!
On Wednesday we went to see “The Strange Path”. It was about Little Red Riding Hood’s granddaughter. We all thought it was very good.
After that, we went carol singing for St. Vincent de Paul. Then we all walked back to school.

Carol singing for St Vincent De Paul

A huge well done to the girls who sang beautifully down town today. A massive €1080 was raised at the carol singing and the money will go to SVP. Fair play to all involved.

The Stray Path

We had a great time today in the town hall at the performance of The Stray Path

Hallelujah Concert

Last Thursday we went to the Hallelujah concert. There were more than 2000 people singing. They were singing the exact same songs as us. Some girls didn’t know that they were singing the same songs. We started off with the family film fun melody. It was so funny seeing everybody dancing. Then we did the weather melody, pop melody and much more…when we finished we had a big surprise…Out came Home Town. All the girls screamed. They sang a song for us. We all sang along and it was so much fun.  There were so many celebrities there that I can’t even name them all…and that was only the practice. When the concert started the lights were on us and we started singing. The concert lasted for at least 2 hours. When it ended we were so tired. Some of us slept in the bus. We arrived at the school at 10:45 sharp.

Fifth class were all about the arts this week...

Yesterday we went to two art exhibitions. It was really fun to look at all the paintings created by artists.  The first one we went to was on Farnham Street, all the paintings were so colourful . At the exhibition there was this tree where people got to put up wishes, dreams and stories. Everyone put up a wish on the tree. Then we went to another art exhibition on Thomas Ashe Street. It was full of paintings and even photographs. Some of the paintings were done by one teacher in our school, Mrs Bradley, they were all so beautiful. We loved that our teacher brought us.

Breakfast time

On Tuesday morning, my class and I had a healthy breakfast at school. We ate breakfast in the parents’ room at half past ten. There were four different tables in in the parents’ room. Each table was filled with different food. There was a table with yogurt, cheese and granola. There was one with bread, another with cereal, milk and porridge and the last one had fruit and fruit juice on the table. Everyone tasted lots of different foods and liked them a lot. We had a great time and everyone wanted to have breakfast at school everyday.

Extraordinary Science

On Monday morning we were all very excited. We were going to Cavan Institute to a science fair. On the way we stopped at the park to play because the other two classes were so far back. Teacher said that it could be our busy break for the day. We ran over to the line so the other classes didn’t see us. When we entered the gates of Cavan Institute there was lots of students welcoming us. When we went in it looked like a hospital. Excitedly we walked into a room upstairs. It felt like we were adults. We sat down together but when sixth class came in we were all squashed. The fair was called Extraordinary Science. The first experiment was to blow a ball out of a bottle. Charlotte was the volunteer. It didn’t work, it kept falling out and hitting Charlotte in the face. Did you know why? It was because the bottle was full of air. The next experiment was to make a helium balloon go up with a heavy piece of tape on the end. He blew a hairdryer on the balloon and it floated into the air. After a few minutes it came back down. There were lots more great experiments. When we got back to the school each pupil got a ruler and a pencil that said www.scienceweek.ie. We all had a great time and would love to go again.

Yoga

On Monday the third of November 2014 my class and I did yoga. We did it for half an hour and it was great fun. We lay on mats and breathed in and out to it. There were candles lit and they smelt lovely. We did a bridge position on our mats. A bridge position is where you put your hands back on the mat and bend over your back. When we did the bridge position we could feel it in our legs and back. We also had to lie down on the mats and try and get up without bending our knees. Did you know that from a new born baby to any age can do yoga? So everyone in the world can do yoga. The class loved yoga because it’s a relaxing time for you and it’s also very good for the body. We can’t wait to do it again!

Swimming

It was our last day of swimming on the 22nd of October. Most of our class went. We were split into two groups. One of the groups were for people who can’t swim a length and the other for people who could swim a length. The swimming lessons went on for six weeks. We all enjoyed swimming. Our class lessons were on a Wednesday. On the last day of swimming lessons our class went on the slides. Some of us went on the slides lots of times. Some of the girls did not go on the slides as many times. It was great fun. We had to walk to the pool and back again even in the rain.

Delving into the Digestive System

In September we were learning all about food and how it is digested in our bodies. In groups we made some life sized drawings of the digestive system.

Show Racism the Red Card

Last Friday we had a very interesting talk about racism in sport. We became news reporters and sports players and held a conference about how to deal with racism. We all agree it's time to show racism the red card.
